Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian has vocally opposed what he describes as the United States' persistent manipulation of social media to spread disinformation. Lin emphasized that these efforts aim to poison public opinion and tarnish China's global image.
Referencing a Reuters report from June 14, Lin highlighted allegations that the Pentagon orchestrated a covert online campaign during the COVID-19 pandemic. This campaign allegedly involved fake internet accounts and misleading social media posts designed to discredit China’s CoronaVac vaccine. A senior U.S. military officer was quoted saying, \"We didn't do a good job sharing vaccines with partners, so what was left to us was to throw shade on China's.\"
Lin commented on the report, stating that such remarks reveal the true intent behind the U.S.' disinformation campaigns against other countries. He criticized the U.S. for ignoring facts and truths, choosing instead to launch smears and vilification through coordinated efforts.
Beyond the pandemic, Lin pointed out that the U.S. has targeted other Chinese initiatives, including the widely welcomed Belt and Road Initiative and the narrative of "overcapacity" in China's new energy vehicles sector, which he asserts is supported by strong supply and demand.
Lin concluded by stating that these disinformation practices do not demonstrate U.S. power but rather reveal its obsession with supremacy and hypocrisy. He called on the international community to see through these tactics and urged the U.S. to adopt a responsible mindset, take on its duties as a major country, and cease propagating disinformation against other nations.
