In a compelling video speech delivered at the opening ceremony of the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized that China will always be a pivotal member of the Global South and the developing world.
Highlighting the significant strides made by UNCTAD over the past six decades, Xi praised the organization's efforts in advancing South-South cooperation, fostering North-South dialogue, and advocating for a new international economic order. He acknowledged UNCTAD’s crucial contributions to global trade and development.
Xi underscored the importance of collective action in building a community with a shared future for mankind. He called for responsible leadership in addressing the accelerated changes and emerging challenges related to peace and development worldwide.
Urging major countries to embrace true multilateralism, Xi advocated for an equal and orderly multipolar world. He stressed the need to adhere to the UN Charter’s principles and support multilateral institutions like UNCTAD to enhance their roles in global governance.
The Chinese president also highlighted the necessity of promoting universal and inclusive economic globalization. He called for improved liberalization and facilitation of trade and investment, addressing developmental imbalances, and striving for more just and equitable global governance.
Recognizing the historical opportunities presented by innovation and development, Xi encouraged the creation of an open, inclusive, and non-discriminatory digital economic environment. He emphasized the importance of strengthening the governance of artificial intelligence within the UN framework, advancing green transitions, and assisting developing countries in embracing digital, smart, and green development trends.
Marking the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, Xi declared that China is progressing in modernization through high-quality development, which will unlock new opportunities for global development. He reiterated China’s commitment to being an enduring member of the Global South and actively expanding imports from other developing countries. Xi concluded by reaffirming China’s dedication to strengthening trade, investment, and development cooperation, and facilitating the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
