On Friday, the Chinese Defense Ministry expressed strong opposition to the U.S. approval of approximately $300 million in arms sales to Taiwan region. Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for the ministry, stated that the U.S. action violates the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, particularly the August 17 Communique. He emphasized that this move undermines China's sovereignty and security interests, jeopardizing peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
Zhang highlighted that the Taiwan question remains the foremost red line between China and the U.S. By supporting Taiwan independence separatist forces, the U.S. is escalating Taiwan into a precarious situation, which he believes will ultimately be detrimental to the U.S. itself.
China urged the U.S. to adhere to the one-China principle, comply with the three joint communiques, and immediately withdraw the arms sales plan, ceasing all forms of arming Taiwan. Additionally, Zhang mentioned that the Chinese People's Liberation Army is intensifying its military training and preparedness to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
