China Urges Global Support for Political Solution to Ukraine Crisis

In a joint press conference in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the need for increased international support towards a political resolution of the Ukraine crisis. Speaking alongside Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Wang highlighted China's unwavering commitment to fostering peace talks.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations. He called for all efforts that contribute to the peaceful resolution of the crisis to be actively supported.

Highlighting Switzerland's role, Wang praised the preparations for the upcoming peace conference, noting that China's constructive suggestions have been well-received by Swiss authorities. He affirmed that China will independently decide its level of participation in global conferences addressing the crisis.

Addressing the global discourse, Wang advocated for more objective and balanced voices to shape the conversation around the Ukraine situation. To this end, China and Brazil have introduced six common understandings aimed at de-escalating tensions. These principles include preventing the expansion of the battlefield, avoiding escalation of fighting, and refraining from provocations by any party.

The consensuses also firmly oppose the use of nuclear weapons and attacks on nuclear power plants and other peaceful nuclear facilities. Wang noted that these six understandings have garnered positive responses from 45 countries across five continents, with 26 countries either joining or considering joining the initiative.

Both Russia and Ukraine have acknowledged most of the consensuses, reflecting a shared aspiration among the majority of nations for a peaceful settlement. Wang concluded by welcoming more countries to support and adopt the six common understandings, reinforcing China's role in promoting global peace and stability.
