Chinese Defense Minister Vows to Protect Taiwan’s Status

At the 21st International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun asserted that the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is prepared to take decisive actions to prevent \"Taiwan independence\" and ensure that such a scenario does not materialize.

Dong emphasized that the Taiwan issue is central to the Chinese mainland's core interests and reiterated that the one-China principle remains a fundamental norm in international relations. He stated, \"We countries in the Asia-Pacific have the ability to resolve tensions among ourselves; we despise coercion from outside hegemonic powers,\" before outlining six measures aimed at safeguarding security and stability in the region.

Highlighting China's dedication to peaceful reunification, Dong noted that external forces and elements within the Taiwan region are undermining this objective by promoting \"incremental independence\" and pushing \"de-sinicization,\" efforts that threaten to weaken the social, historical, and cultural ties across the Taiwan Strait.

Regarding China’s defense policy, Dong affirmed, \"China values peace and harmony. Peaceful development is an integral part of our Constitution. We never seek hegemony or military expansion.\" He pointed out that since the reform and opening up, China has reduced the PLA's size by over 4 million troops, showcasing its commitment to non-expansionist policies.

Dong also addressed the importance of China-U.S. military relations, calling for enhanced communication and cooperation to foster stability. He stressed that both nations should work collaboratively to create positive global expectations.

In discussing global conflicts, Dong stated that China is committed to promoting peace in Ukraine and has abstained from providing weapons to any side. Similarly, regarding the Palestine-Israel conflict, he emphasized China’s role in supporting ceasefire efforts and ending hostilities.
