The Chinese Mainland Accelerates Modernization: Shandong Ports Lead Global Trade Expansion

Built after the Chinese mainland's reform and opening up, Rizhao Port in Shandong Province has evolved into a vital global hub for the transshipment of energy and bulk raw materials.

Through recent technological innovations, the port has been transformed into a modern facility, serving as a key node for the New Eurasian Land Bridge and an important hub for the Belt and Road Initiative. This transformation underscores the mainland's commitment to enhancing its infrastructure and global connectivity.

Rizhao Port, along with Qingdao Port, Yantai Port, and Bohai Bay Port, formed the Shandong Port Group Co., Ltd. five years ago. Last year, the combined cargo throughput of these four ports exceeded 1.7 billion tonnes, positioning them as the world's leading port group.

During his first leg of an inspection tour in Shandong Province from Wednesday to Friday, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, visited Rizhao Port. He recognized the port's significant achievements and emphasized the importance of building a high-level platform for major international exchanges and cooperation.

\"Reform is the driving force for development,\" Xi highlighted on Thursday while chairing a symposium in Jinan, Shandong's capital. The event was attended by representatives from businesses and academia, reflecting the collaborative efforts to further the province's development.

Xi stressed that to deepen reform on all fronts, efforts should focus on improving and developing the socialist system with Chinese characteristics and modernizing the mainland's governance system and capacity. This holistic approach aims to sustain long-term growth and ensure that the Chinese mainland remains at the forefront of global economic trends.
