China's State Council Taiwan Affairs Office announced on Thursday that the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) has initiated military drills around the island of Taiwan as a direct response to a recent speech by Taiwan region leader Lai Ching-te. Lai's address, which advocated for Taiwan's independence, has been cited by Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the office, as a significant provocation.
Chen emphasized that the PLA's actions are intended to serve as a resolute punishment for what he described as Lai's challenges to the one-China principle. He criticized Lai for promoting the \"two-state\" theory and seeking the internationalization of the Taiwan question, actions that Chen claims jeopardize national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
\"We will never tolerate any 'Taiwan independence' separatist acts in any form,\" Chen stated firmly during the press briefing. He further clarified that these countermeasures are aimed at combating separatist activities and external interference that support the independence agenda, and are not directed against the residents of Taiwan.
Looking ahead, Chen expressed hope that the people of Taiwan would stand firmly against separatist movements and external influences, working together to achieve national reunification. He called for unity among Taiwan compatriots to oppose any attempts at independence and interference from foreign entities.
