The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has firmly reiterated its commitment to the one-China principle, emphasizing its opposition to any form of Taiwan independence. Zhang Ming, the secretary-general of the SCO, made these statements while addressing the inauguration of the new leader of the Taiwan region on Monday.
In an interview with Xinhua, Zhang highlighted that the SCO adheres to the purposes and principles of both the UN Charter and the SCO Charter. He emphasized the organization's respect for the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of its member states, and its dedication to safeguarding their security and development interests.
Zhang affirmed that there is only one China and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. He stated that the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the entire nation, categorizing the Taiwan issue as an internal affair of China.
The SCO pledged to continue supporting the Chinese government's stance on the Taiwan question, adhering to the one-China principle, and upholding United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758. Furthermore, the organization opposed any secessionist movements advocating for Taiwan independence.
