China's spokesperson emphasized Wednesday that the new leader of the Taiwan region must decisively address the future of cross-Straits relations, choosing between peaceful development and confrontation.
Chen Binhua, representing the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, delivered these remarks during a press conference, responding to inquiries about the potential inclusion of cross-Straits relations in Lai Ching-te's forthcoming inauguration speech.
Chen highlighted that the majority of public opinion on the island favors peace over war, development over decline, communication over separation, and cooperation over confrontation.
\"Whether to follow the will of the people and pursue peaceful development, or to engage in provocation and confrontation, is a critical decision that impacts not only the residents of Taiwan but also the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait,\" Chen stated.
He further noted that \"Taiwan independence\" is incompatible with cross-Straits peace, comparing them to fire and water. Chen reaffirmed China's commitment to the one-China principle and the '1992 Consensus,' firmly opposing Taiwan independence separatist activities and external interference.
Chen concluded by asserting that the mainland will continue to expand exchanges and cooperation across various fields between the two sides of the strait, deepening integrated development, and steadfastly promoting the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations and national reunification.
