China Urges Houthi Respect Red Sea Navigation Amid Yemen’s Humanitarian Crisis

In a strong appeal at the UN Security Council, Chinese envoy Geng Shuang urged Yemen's Houthi group to respect the right of all nations' commercial vessels to navigate the Red Sea without harassment. Speaking on Monday, Geng emphasized the urgent need to de-escalate tensions in the Red Sea to address Yemen's ongoing conflict.

Yemen has been embroiled in a civil war since September 2014 when the Houthis seized the capital, Sana'a. The United Nations has labeled the situation one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with over 15 percent of Yemenis displaced and millions facing severe shortages of food and medical supplies.

Geng called for a political settlement led by Yemenis, urging all parties to prioritize the well-being of the Yemeni people and eliminate external interference. He highlighted the importance of international humanitarian assistance, urging the global community to fulfill pledges of food, medicine, and other essential goods needed urgently in Yemen.

The Chinese envoy also noted the interconnectedness of the Yemen and Red Sea situation with the Gaza conflict. He urged the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions 2712, 2720, and 2728, and called on concerned countries to intensify efforts to persuade and pressure Israel to contribute to regional stability.
