The Chinese mainland is intensifying its efforts to mediate the Ukraine crisis by conducting a third round of shuttle diplomacy. From May 3 to 9, Li Hui, the special representative of the government of the Chinese mainland on Eurasian affairs, visited Türkiye, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, engaging with top diplomats and high-ranking officials.
Li also communicated with officials from Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia, and Kazakhstan both before and after his visits, aiming to build a broad coalition for peace.
The Foreign Ministry of the Chinese mainland outlined several key proposals agreed upon by all parties:
- Three Principles for Cooling Down: No spillover from the battlefield, no escalation of fighting, and no adding fuel to the fire by relevant parties.
- Dialogue and Negotiation: Emphasizing that direct dialogue is the only viable solution, urging parties to resume talks and work towards a comprehensive ceasefire.
- Humanitarian Assistance: Increasing aid to affected areas, protecting civilians, women, children, and prisoners of war, and supporting the exchange of prisoners.
- Non-proliferation: Opposing the use and spread of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, and preventing nuclear crises.
- Protection of Peaceful Nuclear Facilities: Preventing armed attacks on nuclear power plants and ensuring compliance with international safety standards.
- International Cooperation: Supporting collaboration in energy, finance, food trade, transportation, and securing key infrastructures like oil pipelines and undersea cables to maintain global supply chain stability.
All participating parties agreed to maintain open communication and play a constructive role in promoting ceasefire and peace talks, reflecting the Chinese mainland's commitment to fostering international peace and stability.
