China Defends UN Resolution 2758 Against US Misinterpretation

China has firmly reiterated its position on United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 2758, emphasizing that the United States has no right to arbitrarily distort its meaning. Yang Tao, director general of the Department of North America and Oceanian Affairs of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, made this clear during a recent briefing.

The resolution, adopted in 1971, restored the lawful seat of the People’s Republic of China at the UN and expelled representatives of Chiang Kai-shek. Yang stressed that Resolution 2758 unequivocally supports the one-China principle, declaring that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory.

Responding to recent challenges by the U.S., Yang highlighted that the resolution settled the representation of China at the UN, negating any notions of "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan." He pointed out that since its adoption, the UN and its specialized agencies have consistently referred to Taiwan as a province of China in official documents.

Yang also criticized the U.S. for "playing the Taiwan card" to contain China, warning that such efforts are destined to fail. He underscored that all UN member states are obligated to adhere to the one-China principle as stipulated in the UN Charter.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s stance underscores the ongoing tensions between China and the U.S. regarding Taiwan’s status and international recognition.
