UN Chief Urges Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza Amid Rising Conflict

In a pressing call for peace, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres demanded an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas on Tuesday. Speaking to journalists in New York, Guterres highlighted the dire and escalating situation in Gaza, describing it as \"worsening by the day.\"

He emphasized the critical need for a ceasefire to protect the lives of the people in Gaza, the hostages and their families in Israel, and to stabilize the wider region. \"Without an agreement, the war, with all its consequences both in Gaza and across the region, will worsen exponentially,\" Guterres warned.

Guterres also pointed to the intensifying airstrikes in the Rafah area, cautioning that a military assault there would lead to an unbearable escalation. Such an assault, he noted, would result in thousands more civilian deaths and force hundreds of thousands to flee their homes, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

The UN chief's urgent plea underscores the international community's concern over the rapidly deteriorating conditions and the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to achieve lasting peace.
