In a significant move to enhance regional collaboration, China and Peru have agreed to deepen their cooperation with Latin American and Caribbean countries. This agreement was solidified on Monday when Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Peruvian Foreign Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea Franco in Beijing.
Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, emphasized China's commitment to building on the strong consensus reached by the two nations' leaders. He highlighted the importance of traditional friendship and the pursuit of high-quality, mutually beneficial cooperation based on high-level political trust. This collaboration aims to elevate their comprehensive strategic partnership to new heights.
China is poised to align its development strategies with Peru's, expedite the negotiations for upgrading the Free Trade Agreement, and broaden practical cooperation across various sectors. Wang Yi also expressed China's readiness to support Peru's industrialization efforts, underscoring the mutual benefits of their partnership.
The Chinese foreign minister reiterated China's support for Peru's role in organizing the upcoming APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting. He stressed the importance of coordinated efforts to tackle major global challenges such as climate change and the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Wang Yi affirmed China's dedication to safeguarding the shared interests of developing nations.
Both ministers agreed to enhance collaboration in education, culture, tourism, science and technology, and youth engagement. Gonzalez-Olaechea Franco reaffirmed Peru's steadfast adherence to the one-China principle and expressed a strong willingness to build solidarity and mutual trust with China. He looked forward to expanding practical cooperation and achieving more substantial outcomes in Peru-China relations.
The discussions also covered strategies to strengthen communication and coordination for this year’s APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, aiming to inject new momentum into Asia-Pacific economic growth. Additionally, both sides committed to deepening cooperation in infrastructure development, the digital economy, health, and green initiatives. They pledged to support each other on core interests and work together to promote the peaceful resolution of international disputes.
