Mainland China Urges Taiwan to Resume Direct Cross-Straits Flights and Voyages
A spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council has called on Taiwan to consider proposals to resume direct cross-Straits flights and maritime voyages between the two regions as soon as possible.
Zhu Fenglian emphasized the importance of reestablishing routes such as the Pingtan-Taipei and Xiamen-Taichung maritime passenger services, along with direct passenger flights connecting Taiwan to 30 mainland destinations. These services, according to Zhu, have significantly facilitated visits between residents of both sides, fostering shared interests and stronger connections.
While there has been a partial return of direct cross-Straits air and maritime routes since last year, the mainland’s transition to a new COVID-19 response phase has left air passenger destinations limited and maritime passenger services yet to resume fully.
