Solomon Islands PM’s Party Tops Election, Coalition Talks Underway

In a closely contested parliamentary election, the Ownership, Unity and Responsibility Party (Our Party), led by incumbent Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, emerged as the largest party by securing 15 out of 50 seats, according to national broadcaster SIBC.

The opposition Coalition for Accountability Reform and Empowerment (CARE) comprised of the Solomon Islands Democratic Party, the Democratic Alliance Party, and UMI for Change Party, garnered a total of 13 seats. Other parties, including the Solomon Islands United Party and the Solomon Islands People First Party, along with smaller factions like the Kandere Party and the Solomon Islands Party for Rural Advancement, took home a combined 11 seats.

Adding to the political landscape, 10 independent candidates were elected, introducing an element of unpredictability to the formation of the new government. With no single party achieving an outright majority, coalition-building efforts are set to play a crucial role in determining the next administration.

Both Our Party and the CARE coalition are likely to engage in negotiations with smaller parties and independent members to secure the necessary majority in parliament. The influence of independent candidates could be pivotal, potentially swaying the balance of power depending on their alliances and support during coalition talks.

The election saw a competitive race with 334 candidates vying for the 50 parliamentary seats, highlighting the vibrant democratic process in the Solomon Islands. As coalition discussions commence, the focus now shifts to how parties will collaborate to form a stable and effective government.
