China’s Foreign Minister Advocates Peaceful Cooperation in South Pacific

In a significant dialogue held in Port Moresby, the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized that the South Pacific region should remain free from major power rivalries. Speaking with Papua New Guinea's Foreign Minister Justin Tkachenko, Wang underscored the importance of mutual support and practical cooperation between China and South Pacific island nations.

Wang Yi highlighted that no country should consider any island in the region as its \"backyard.\" Instead, he advocated for collaborative efforts that bring tangible benefits to the people of these nations. \"Countries should not seek zero-sum games or exclusive arrangements, but should do more practical things for island countries and bring more benefits to the people of island countries,\" Wang stated.

Affirming China's commitment to the South Pacific, Wang pointed out that as a developing country, China is dedicated to mutual support and common development without pursuing any geopolitical interests. He expressed China's readiness to work closely with Papua New Guinea to implement the shared understandings between their leaders, aiming to build a high-level and high-quality comprehensive strategic partnership.

Furthermore, Wang assured that China will continue to support Papua New Guinea in safeguarding its sovereignty, independence, and national unity. He also highlighted the importance of enhancing cooperation in various sectors, including economy, trade, investment, infrastructure, agriculture, forestry and fishery, clean energy, and climate change.

Acknowledging Papua New Guinea's role in the Belt and Road Initiative, Wang Yi indicated China's willingness to maintain high-level exchanges and commence free trade agreement negotiations promptly. This collaboration is expected to accelerate national revitalization, improve livelihoods, and enable Papua New Guinea to play a more significant role in regional and multilateral affairs.
