Croatia Heads to Polls: Key Parliamentary Elections on Track

Croatia is set to hold its parliamentary elections this Wednesday, with voters making their way to the polls to elect all 151 members of the national parliament.

Leading the charge is the ruling center-right Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), headed by Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic. The HDZ is up against a formidable alliance of centrist and left-wing parties, informally led by President Zoran Milanovic and his Social Democratic Party.

With approximately 3.7 million voters casting their ballots across more than 2,000 candidates, the election is shaping up to be a pivotal moment for Croatia’s political future. Polling stations open at 7 a.m. (0500 GMT) and will remain open until 7 p.m., with exit polls expected shortly after the vote concludes.

Recent opinion polls conducted by IPSOS predict that the HDZ is likely to secure 60 seats in the 151-seat parliament. While this would make HDZ the largest party in the parliament, it falls short of an outright majority, indicating that coalition talks are anticipated in the aftermath of the elections.

Official results are expected to be announced in the days following the election, setting the stage for Croatia's next government formation.
