In a significant diplomatic move, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, held phone talks on Monday to address the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.
Amir-Abdollahian briefed Wang on Iran's stance regarding the recent attack on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria. He highlighted that the UN Security Council had not responded adequately to the incident and asserted Iran's right to self-defense in protecting its sovereignty.
Emphasizing the sensitivity of the current regional climate, Amir-Abdollahian assured that Iran is committed to exercising restraint and has no intentions of further escalating the situation.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, vehemently condemned the attack on the Iranian embassy in Damascus. He labeled the incident as a severe violation of international law and deemed it unacceptable.
China acknowledged Iran's position that the actions taken were limited and solely in self-defense against the assault on its consulate in Syria. Wang expressed appreciation for Iran's commitment to not targeting regional and neighboring countries and reiterated its pursuit of a friendly and good-neighborly policy.
Wang also pointed out that the ongoing tensions are a spillover from the Gaza conflict. He stressed the urgent need to implement UN Security Council Resolution 2728 to swiftly resolve the Gaza conflict, protect civilians, and prevent further humanitarian disasters.
China expressed its willingness to maintain open communication with Iran to work towards a comprehensive, just, and lasting settlement of the Palestinian issue, aiming to ensure regional stability and uphold both nations' sovereignty and dignity.
