The Chinese embassy in the United States has issued a strong rebuke against recent joint statements from the U.S. and Japan, criticizing China on sensitive issues.
In a statement released on Friday, the embassy spokesperson accused the U.S. and Japan of adopting a Cold War mentality and engaging in small group politics. The spokesperson highlighted that the statements smeared China regarding the Taiwan question, maritime issues, and nuclear policy, while also interfering in China’s domestic affairs and violating basic international norms.
"China deplores and opposes such moves, and has made serious demarches to the U.S. side," the spokesperson emphasized.
The spokesperson further stressed that the Taiwan question is at the core of China's national interests and is the most sensitive issue in China-U.S. relations. They reiterated that Taiwan is purely a domestic affair for China and does not tolerate any external interference.
"We urge the U.S. to adhere to the one-China principle and the provisions in the three China-U.S. joint communiques, prudently and properly handle the Taiwan-related issues, and turn President Biden's commitment of not supporting 'Taiwan independence' into concrete actions," the spokesperson concluded.
