In a recent address at the United Nations Security Council, China emphasized the need for intensified diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the ongoing Ukraine crisis. Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative, highlighted the devastating impact of the conflict, urging all parties to pursue a ceasefire and work towards a political settlement.
Geng stressed that continuing to supply weapons to the battlefield would only escalate the situation, increasing casualties without aiding in de-escalation or resolution. \"China's position on the Ukraine issue has always been consistent and clear. We are committed to being an advocate for peace and promoter of peace talks,\" he stated.
He further called for the timely convening of an international conference recognized by both Russia and Ukraine, advocating for the equal participation of all parties to discuss peace options fairly. China has reiterated its readiness to provide the necessary conditions for negotiations, aiming to achieve an early political settlement and restore peace in the region.
Geng also clarified that China is not a creator or participant in the crisis, having not supplied lethal weapons or profited from the conflict in any way. Instead, China positions itself as a neutral party dedicated to promoting dialogue and peaceful resolution.
