China Supports IAEA’s Mission to Safeguard Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Facility After Drone Strikes

China has expressed its support for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in strengthening the safety and security of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP) following recent drone attacks. During a special meeting of the IAEA's 35-nation Board of Governors, China's permanent representative, Li Song, emphasized the heightened nuclear safety risks posed by the ongoing conflict.

Li highlighted that the Zaporizhzhia facility, Europe's largest nuclear power plant, is situated in a volatile battlefield, raising concerns about potential nuclear accidents that could have far-reaching consequences beyond the immediate region. \"The impact of nuclear accidents transcends borders and there is no room for error,\" he warned.

The meeting, initiated by Russia and Ukraine, addressed the recent attacks on ZNPP, which struck the plant on Sunday and Tuesday—the first direct assaults since November 2022, according to the IAEA. These developments underscore the critical need for international cooperation to ensure the plant's safety amid ongoing hostilities.
