In a significant move towards strengthening international ties, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Surinamese President Chandrikapersad Santokhi in Beijing this past Friday. President Xi expressed China’s readiness to expand the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) collaboration with Suriname, highlighting a range of sectors poised for growth.
The bilateral discussions focused on enhancing political mutual trust and boosting economic and trade cooperation. Both leaders emphasized the importance of expanding people-to-people exchanges and deepening international coordination to build a closer strategic partnership between China and Suriname.
President Xi outlined specific areas for collaboration, including trade and investment, agriculture, energy, mining, infrastructure construction, and the digital economy. He welcomed more high-quality specialty products from Suriname to enter the Chinese market, signaling robust opportunities for local businesses.
Suriname, recognized as one of the first Caribbean nations to establish a strategic partnership with China under the BRI, has been a model of South-South cooperation. With one of the largest overseas Chinese communities in the Caribbean, Suriname continues to foster strong cultural and economic ties with China.
President Santokhi reiterated Suriname’s commitment to upholding the one-China principle and supporting China’s efforts towards national reunification. He also expressed eagerness to expand cooperation in green development and climate action, further solidifying the bilateral relationship.
The summit concluded with the signing of multiple cooperation agreements in areas such as trade and investment, green development, education, and the digital economy. These agreements mark a pivotal step in building a global community of shared future, as China and Suriname collaborate to achieve common development goals.
