China Urges Philippines to Reopen Talks Over Ren’ai Jiao Dispute

The Chinese Embassy in the Philippines has called on the Philippine side to honor its commitments and return to constructive dialogue regarding the Ren'ai Jiao issue. Emphasizing the importance of managing the dispute through consultation, the embassy seeks to steer both nations back to a path of peaceful negotiation.

In a recent interview, Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos expressed his lack of knowledge about a \"gentleman's agreement\" related to Ren'ai Jiao, stating his dismay at the notion that the Philippines might have compromised its territory and sovereignty through a secret deal.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy responded by reiterating China's belief that territorial disputes should be resolved peacefully through negotiation. \"Before the territorial disputes are settled, differences should be properly managed through dialogue and consultation to maintain peace and stability,\" the spokesperson emphasized.

The spokesperson also highlighted that China has been working with both previous administrations and the current Philippine government to find pragmatic ways to manage the Ren'ai Jiao situation without prejudicing either country's principled stance on the dispute.

Reflecting on past interactions, the spokesperson noted that previous understandings and agreements had successfully maintained peace and stability around Ren'ai Jiao for several years. However, the situation has become more challenging recently, with recurring incidents arising from the lack of adherence to these agreements.
