In a recent address to the United Nations Security Council, Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative, emphasized the importance of advancing Colombia's national development and sustainable peace efforts.
Shuang highlighted that progress in rural reform, land distribution, and the reintegration of ex-combatants remains a significant hurdle in implementing the peace agreement. \"We look forward to such efforts being translated into a solid foundation for advancing the peace process,\" he stated.
China lauded the extension of the ceasefire between the Colombian government and the National Liberation Army and expressed optimism about the ongoing seventh round of peace talks. Additionally, China welcomed the Colombian government's initiative to engage in peace talks with other armed groups.
Emphasizing the need for dialogue and reconciliation, Shuang called on all parties to demonstrate willingness and determination to engage in peaceful negotiations, reduce conflict and violence, and create a conducive environment for sustained dialogue.
He also underscored the necessity of improving Colombia's security situation through concrete efforts, which are crucial for strengthening public confidence in the peace process. China reaffirmed its support for Colombia's security policies, including the deployment of security forces in former conflict zones and the protection of vulnerable populations such as women, children, ethnic minorities, and ex-combatants.
Commending the UN Verification Mission's significant contributions to Colombia's peace process, China expressed its readiness to continue supporting the mission and collaborating with international and regional partners to advance a Colombian-led and Colombian-owned peace process.
