China and Micronesia Set to Elevate Bilateral Relations

In a significant move to strengthen international ties, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed China’s commitment to elevating its relationship with the Federated States of Micronesia during a meeting with Micronesian President Wesley W. Simina in Beijing on Tuesday.

President Xi emphasized China’s support for Micronesia in safeguarding its national sovereignty and independence. He highlighted China’s dedication to assisting Micronesia in following a development path tailored to its national conditions, revitalizing its economy, and improving the livelihoods of its people.

Marking the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, Xi announced plans to use this milestone as a new starting point for enhanced cooperation. He outlined a vision for maintaining exchanges and dialogues at all levels, and for strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation across various sectors.

Key areas of focus include accelerating Belt and Road initiatives, bolstering infrastructure projects, and fostering people-to-people exchanges in culture, health, and education. President Xi extended a warm invitation to more young Micronesians to pursue their studies in China, aiming to build lasting cultural and educational ties.

Addressing global challenges, China pledged to support Micronesia in combating climate change within the framework of South-South cooperation. Additionally, China offered capacity-building training to further empower Micronesia in various sectors.

On the international stage, China committed to strengthening coordination and cooperation with Micronesia within multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations and the Pacific Islands Forum. This collaboration aims to jointly promote multilateralism and uphold justice.

President Xi concluded by reiterating that China’s approach to relations with Pacific island countries is based on mutual assistance within South-South cooperation. He emphasized that these relationships are not directed at any third party and should remain free from external interference.
