In a significant move strengthening regional ties, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed China’s support for Timor-Leste’s formal accession to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The meeting took place in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, where Wang met with Bendito dos Santos Freitas, Timor-Leste’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. Wang highlighted that since elevating their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership last September, the bilateral relations between China and Timor-Leste have made historic progress.
Wang emphasized China’s commitment to being a trustworthy and reliable partner for Timor-Leste, supporting its tailored development path and aiming to enhance its role in international and regional affairs. He called on both nations to implement the consensus reached by their leaders, promoting continuous improvement and upgrading of their strategic partnership.
China’s development initiatives are set to provide support and create opportunities for developing countries, including Timor-Leste, fostering a more interconnected and prosperous region.
