British Professor’s Book Validates China’s Claims in South China Sea

Anthony Carty, a British international law professor at the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), has authored a groundbreaking book titled “The History and Sovereignty of South China Sea.” His extensive research, spanning decades and involving primary sources from the UK, France, and the US, provides academic evidence supporting China’s position on the South China Sea.

In his book’s preface, Carty emphasizes that his research was conducted independently over the past decade, without commissions or feedback from Chinese authorities. This independent approach underpins his credible analysis of the complex sovereignty issues in the region.

During a symposium in Beijing on March 20, Carty highlighted how legal advice and political decisions regarding the South China Sea are often influenced by political pressures and strategic interests of powerful nations, rather than purely legal perspectives. He expressed his commitment to promoting equitable solutions to the South China Sea disputes through his research.

Li Shouping, president of the Beijing Society of International Law and dean of BIT's law school, praised Carty’s work at the symposium. He described “The History and Sovereignty of South China Sea” as an insightful analysis that reaffirms China’s sovereignty over Nanhai Zhudao (the South China Sea Islands) from a historical standpoint. Li also noted that the book revitalizes the importance of national archives in international law.

“The History and Sovereignty of South China Sea” is now available in Chinese, making its findings accessible to a broader audience.
