Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena in Beijing on Wednesday, committing to deepen the longstanding friendship between their nations and promote greater cooperation.
Xi highlighted the deep historical ties and natural affinity shared by the Chinese and Sri Lankan peoples, emphasizing that strengthening their relationship aligns with the fundamental interests and shared aspirations of both nations. He invoked the spirit of the Rubber-Rice Pact, characterized by independence, self-reliance, unity, and mutual support, as a foundation for consolidating political trust and expanding practical cooperation.
The leaders agreed to advance their strategic partnership through sincere mutual assistance and enduring friendship. China expressed firm support for Sri Lanka's sovereignty, independence, and its pursuit of a path to modernization that suits the country's unique conditions. Xi assured that China will continue to assist Sri Lanka's economic and social development to the best of its ability.
Both countries pledged to enhance collaboration in key areas such as logistics, energy, and industry. Additionally, they aim to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in emerging fields including the digital economy, green economy, clean energy, culture and tourism, and the marine economy. China also committed to expanding imports of Sri Lankan specialty and high-quality products while encouraging Chinese enterprises to invest in Sri Lanka, with expectations of a fair and transparent business environment.
