China Advocates Dialogue and Cooperation to Safeguard Human Rights at UN Council

At the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council, China's permanent representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Chen Xu, emphasized the importance of dialogue and cooperation in promoting and protecting human rights globally.

Joining the Group of Friends on the Promotion of Human Rights through Dialogues and Cooperation, Chen Xu criticized the politicization and instrumentalization of human rights issues. He highlighted that the increasingly polarized atmosphere within the Human Rights Council contradicts its foundational principles of universality, impartiality, and objectivity.

The joint statement outlined three key propositions for the Council's work:

  • Fairness and Justice: Upholding the principles of the UN Charter, opposing interference in member states' internal affairs under the guise of human rights, and calling for an immediate halt to unilateral coercive measures.
  • Openness and Inclusiveness: Facilitating dialogue and cooperation on equal and respectful terms, expanding consensus through exchanges, and protecting human rights through peace, security, and collaborative development.
  • Objectivity and Impartiality: Basing work on accurate and objective information, respecting the sovereignty and political independence of all nations, and providing technical assistance tailored to each country's needs and preferences.

The statement received widespread support and praise from developing nations, reinforcing the call for a more balanced and cooperative approach to human rights on the international stage.
