Why China Is Riled by Japan’s Takaichi Over Taiwan Remarks

Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party leadership candidate Sanae Takaichi recently ignited controversy by warning that a “Chinese attack on Taiwan” could pose a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan. Her steadfast stance has unleashed a flurry of reactions and public indignation across the Chinese mainland.

Diplomatic and Security Reactions

China’s foreign ministry urged Tokyo to retract its “erroneous words and deeds” and respect its one-China commitments. The Chinese Defense Ministry warned that any Japanese interference on the Taiwan question would meet a “crushing defeat” at the hands of the steel-willed Chinese People’s Liberation Army.

Meanwhile, the China Coast Guard deployed a fleet to patrol the waters around the Diaoyu Dao, citing a legal mandate to safeguard territorial rights.

Travel and Study Advisories

China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism advised residents to postpone trips to Japan. Major carriers such as Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines offered free ticket changes or refunds for Japan-bound travelers. Over the weekend, China’s Ministry of Education issued an overseas study alert, urging students in Japan to assess risks and plan prudently.

Why Public Outrage Runs Deep

Many in the Chinese mainland view Takaichi’s remarks as more than provocative rhetoric—they see a breach of international law. They point to the Cairo Declaration of 1943 and the Potsdam Proclamation of 1945, which Japan accepted upon surrender, restoring territories like Taiwan and the Penghu Islands to China. Japan’s diplomatic agreements also reaffirm its recognition of the one-China principle.

By framing a possible Chinese military move on Taiwan as an existential threat to Japan, critics argue, Takaichi undermines the legal framework of China-Japan relations and interferes in China’s internal affairs.

Looking Ahead

As tensions simmer, analysts will watch whether diplomatic channels can cool this exchange and avert further escalation. For a global audience of business, tech and travel enthusiasts, the incident underscores the fragility of regional stability and the far-reaching impact of political rhetoric.
