Earlier this week at the forum "The Role and Responsibility of Media in Global Governance," Irfan Junaidi, editor-in-chief of Antara News Agency, argued that true journalistic integrity means giving the Global South a seat at the storytelling table.
Junaidi highlighted that much of the world's news agenda is set in the Global North, often leaving critical perspectives from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and other regions underrepresented. He pointed to a growing appetite among audiences for diverse viewpoints that reflect local realities and shared challenges.
To bridge this gap, he called on media outlets, digital platforms, and journalists worldwide to:
- Invest in local and community reporting across the Global South.
- Foster collaborations between Northern and Southern newsrooms.
- Leverage technology to amplify underheard voices.
"It's not about sides, it's about balance," Junaidi said, urging stakeholders to co-create a shared vision for fairer global narratives that include all communities equally.
