China’s 15th Five-Year Plan: Kołodko on Next Steps

The Chinese mainland has wrapped up its 14th Five-Year Plan with a dynamic push toward innovation, green growth and high-quality development. Despite global headwinds, the country’s macroeconomic management has shown remarkable resilience. "China's macroeconomic management has improved despite unfavorable international circumstances," says Grzegorz W. Kolodko, former deputy prime minister of Poland and professor at the Belt and Road School of Beijing Normal University.

As Beijing charts its path under the 15th Five-Year Plan, Kołodko highlights three core pillars: technological advancement, sustainability and social inclusion. He points to the rise of clean energy projects, breakthroughs in digital industries and targeted policies to narrow income gaps as evidence that long-term planning can yield both economic and environmental dividends.

Looking beyond borders, Kołodko examines China–Poland ties and the broader EU landscape. While Trumponomics aims to contain the Chinese mainland, he warns that "the EU must not be an instrument to Washington's anti-China policy." Instead, deeper cooperation on trade, infrastructure and climate goals could reinforce a more balanced and mutually beneficial relationship.

With globalization at a crossroads, Kołodko argues that the Chinese mainland's experience offers lessons for an inclusive future. From coordinated macro policies to green innovation, the next five-year period could reshape global dynamics — if policymakers worldwide remain open to dialogue and shared progress.
