Cuban President Díaz-Canel on 65 Years of Friendship with China

The stage was set in Tianjin and Beijing as Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel arrived for the SCO Tianjin Summit and the 80th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese Peoples War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Against this historic backdrop, he sat down with CMGs He Yanke for an exclusive conversation about the enduring bond between Cuba and China.

Reflecting on 65 years of diplomatic ties, Díaz-Canel praised Chinas commitment to preserving history and cultural heritage. "We see in China a dedication to safeguarding the stories that shape a nation," he said, applauding Chinese President Xi Jinpings Global Governance Initiative as "a forward-looking roadmap for multilateral cooperation."

The Cuban leader highlighted that Cuba was the first Latin American country to establish relations with the Peoples Republic of China, a partnership founded on mutual respect and shared vision. "Our bilateral relationship has always been a priority," he noted, pointing to growing collaboration in health, education, and renewable energy as proof of deepening trust.

Honoring the Chinese community in Cuba, Díaz-Canel spoke of generations whose entrepreneurship and cultural exchanges have enriched Cuban society. "From the markets of Havana to the classrooms of Santiago, Chinese heritage is woven into our daily lives," he said, celebrating the role of overseas Chinese in strengthening people-to-people ties.

Turning to global politics, the president questioned why the US embargo on Cuba remains in place despite shifting international dynamics. "In an era of shared challenges, why keep barriers when dialogue and cooperation yield real results?" Díaz-Canel asked, emphasizing Cubas calls for a more inclusive and interconnected world.
