At 70, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China is celebrating decades of transformation, evolving from a remote frontier into a thriving hub of growth, culture, and connectivity.
This year, China’s State Council Information Office released a white paper titled “CPC Guidelines for Governing Xinjiang in the New Era: Practice and Achievements,” highlighting the policies and milestones that have shaped the region’s journey.
Economic Momentum
Over seven decades, Xinjiang’s economy has surged. Last year, GDP surpassed 2 trillion yuan—about $278 billion—for the first time, posting 6.1% year-on-year growth. Rich in oil, gas, and minerals, the region has balanced industrial expansion with sustainable resource use. High-speed rail lines, modern highways, and new airports now connect Xinjiang to inland provinces, reinforcing its role as a gateway in the Belt and Road Initiative.
Unity in Diversity
Home to 56 ethnic groups, Xinjiang has cultivated a harmonious multiethnic society. Targeted investments in education, healthcare, and social welfare have ensured fair opportunities across all communities. From 2010 to 2018, the Uygur population grew by 25.04%, outpacing local Han population growth by 23 percentage points. Policies preserving minority languages and traditions have empowered residents to participate fully in social and economic life.
Safety and Stability
Upholding peace and security has been central to Xinjiang’s progress. Guided by law-based governance and community engagement, local authorities have addressed complex challenges, restoring order and creating a safe environment. This stability has attracted investment, fueled infrastructure projects, and improved daily life for millions.
Sustainability in Practice
Xinjiang’s environmental strides are significant. Oasis areas have expanded by 56,000 square kilometers, while desertified land has shrunk by nearly 2,000 square kilometers. Over the past decade, the frequency of sandstorms has dropped by 14%, showcasing effective ecological restoration efforts.
As Xinjiang marks this milestone, its story stands as a modern testament to balanced development, cultural unity, and forward-looking sustainability. The 70th anniversary not only celebrates past achievements but also sets the stage for a future focused on high-quality growth and shared prosperity.
