Beijing Xiangshan Forum 2023: Global Leaders Unite for Peace and Security

From September 17 to 19, over 100 countries and regions, along with international organizations, convened at the Beijing International Convention Center for the 12th Beijing Xiangshan Forum. Under the theme "Upholding International Order and Promoting Peaceful Development," participants explored collaborative strategies to address mounting security and development challenges.

Launched in 2006 as a Track 2 dialogue by the China Association for Military Science, the Xiangshan Forum has grown into a Track 1.5 platform since 2014. This evolution reflects its rising influence: it now draws defense and security experts, policymakers, and scholars from developed nations, emerging powers, and conflict-affected regions.

With 19 years of history, the forum has become a beacon for open, inclusive dialogue. Sessions this year span topics from maritime security and cybersecurity to regional conflict resolution and sustainable development. Data shared on collaborative peacekeeping projects highlighted a 30% increase in joint exercises among Asia-Pacific nations over the past five years.

Experts emphasize that the Xiangshan Forum’s strength lies in its diverse participation. By pooling expertise from small and medium-sized states alongside major powers, the forum fosters trust and consensus. Attendees note that this multilateral approach is crucial to forging practical solutions that resonate across borders.

As digital-savvy young leaders and entrepreneurs track the forum’s outcomes, many see opportunities for tech-driven peace initiatives and private-sector partnerships. From startups deploying blockchain for transparent humanitarian aid to universities partnering on cross-border security research, the forum’s ripple effects extend far beyond its three-day agenda.

Looking ahead, participants are calling for stronger follow-up mechanisms to translate dialogue into action. With global tensions shifting and challenges like climate-driven resource conflicts on the rise, the Xiangshan Forum’s role as a convener of ideas remains more vital than ever.
