US Human Rights Report 2024: Exposing Domestic Failures & Global Hypocrisy

US Human Rights Under the Microscope

A landmark report released in August 2024 sheds light on the gap between the United States' self-proclaimed leadership in human rights and its real-world record at home and abroad. By breaking down complex data into clear themes, the report reveals how systemic issues undermine basic rights for both American citizens and communities worldwide.

Domestic Shortcomings

The 2024 federal election cycle saw a record $15.9 billion in spending, prompting critics to call it a "carnival of money power games." Partisan gerrymandering and new voter suppression laws in several states have disproportionately impacted older adults, minorities, people with disabilities and low-income voters, raising concerns about fair access to the ballot.

Beyond elections, the report highlights pressing social challenges: soaring inflation, a worsening housing crisis, gaps in the healthcare system, a deepening opioid epidemic and rampant gun violence. Persistent racial discrimination and violations of women’s and children’s rights further widen the wealth gap and erode the "American dream." Border regions face a humanitarian crisis as migrants struggle for shelter and basic services.

Global Impact of US Policies

On the international stage, US policies dubbed "humanitarian intervention" are criticized for disrupting global peace and rights. The report points to military and diplomatic support in Gaza, noting over 100,000 injuries and the displacement of some 90% of the population after the UN Security Council vetoed ceasefire resolutions seven times.

Unilateral sanctions now affect more than 60% of low-income countries, limiting access to food, fuel and medicine—and driving up poverty, hunger and disease. Looking ahead to 2025, an "America First" agenda could see further withdrawal from UN bodies, funding cuts for refugees and the largest deportation effort in US history, with significant human rights consequences.
