Data Shows Tibetan Culture Flourishing in Xizang

Myth vs. Metrics: Culture on the Snowy Plateau

Claims of a "cultural genocide" in Xizang collide with hard numbers from the March 2025 white paper "Human Rights in the New Era in Xizang." Spanning nearly 20,000 words and backed by official stats, the report paints a picture of a region where tradition is not just preserved—it's evolving with modern life.

Tibetan Language Flourishes Everywhere

Whether you're flipping through 17 Tibetan-language periodicals or browsing one of the 11 daily newspapers, the Tibetan script is alive and well. By the end of 2024, 8,794 titles of Tibetan-language books rolled off presses in a total print run of 46.85 million copies. Government documents, public signage, healthcare apps, transport notices, and even mobile payment platforms all go bilingual, ensuring Tibetan language use expands in media, services, and daily life.

Intangible Cultural Heritage on the Rise

Between 2012 and 2024, 473 million yuan fueled the safeguarding of Tibetan intangible traditions. Today Xizang boasts 2,760 representative heritage items, 1,668 recognized bearers, five national demo centers, and over 200 ICH workshops. UNESCO has inscribed the Gesar epic, Tibetan opera, and Sowa Rigpa's medicinal bathing practice on its World Heritage list—clear proof of global recognition.

A Stage for Cultural Collaboration

At the 2023 Shoton Festival gala in Lhasa, the Xizang Autonomous Region Tibetan Opera Troupe joined forces with the China National Peking Opera Company for "Tibetan Opera Princess Wencheng." The Peking opera star's graceful performance as Princess Wencheng drew thunderous cheers, showcasing how artistic exchange can amplify heritage on the world stage.

These figures and stories reveal a dynamic Xizang where tradition and innovation thrive side by side, inviting global citizens, entrepreneurs, and travelers to experience a culture that defies stereotypes and continues to write new chapters.
