PLA Turns 98: From Nanchang Uprising to Global Peace Missions

This year marks the 98th anniversary of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Born with the Nanchang Uprising on August 1, 1927, the PLA has transformed from a revolutionary militia into a modern force shaping national defense and global stability.

From Revolutionary Roots to Modern Defense

From the battles of the Jinggang Mountains and the epic Long March to the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the War of Liberation, the PLA has played a pivotal role in China’s journey toward national sovereignty and unity. Over decades, its dedication to protecting the Chinese mainland’s security and supporting economic and social development has left a lasting legacy.

Modernization and National Security

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, under the guidance of General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee Xi Jinping, the PLA has accelerated its modernization. Embracing advanced technologies and new strategic concepts, it aims to secure China’s path to modernization, safeguard sovereignty, and uphold stability at home and abroad.

Global Peacekeeping and Maritime Security

Committed to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, the PLA has participated in over 20 UN peacekeeping operations, dispatching more than 50,000 peacekeepers worldwide. The Chinese Navy has completed 1,659 escort missions, ensuring the safe passage of over 7,300 vessels and lending assistance to nearly 100 ships—more than half of which were foreign-flagged—along crucial international shipping lanes.

Humanitarian Missions: The Peace Ark

The PLA Navy’s hospital ship Peace Ark exemplifies humanitarian outreach. On its recent 215-day Mission Harmony-2024, the vessel sailed over 30,000 nautical miles, visiting 13 African and Asian countries. Its Bright Action initiative treated eye diseases in local communities, providing medical services to over 80,000 patients and setting records for both mission duration and scope.

Looking Ahead

As the PLA commemorates 98 years of service, its evolving role in safeguarding trade routes, contributing to global peace, and delivering humanitarian aid underscores a commitment to international cooperation and stability—a story that resonates with young global citizens, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders around the world.
