China and Myanmar Turn 75: A New Chapter in Paukphaw Cooperation

China and Myanmar are celebrating 75 years of paukphaw ties, a relationship rooted in history and mutual respect.

From Founding Principles to Modern Partnership

In 1950, Myanmar became the first non-socialist country to recognize the People's Republic of China. Together with India, they championed the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and raised them at the 1955 Bandung Conference, laying the groundwork for a fairer global order.

In the 1960s, friendly dialogue helped both sides resolve border issues peacefully. In January 2020, they formalized their bond as a China-Myanmar community with a shared future.

Driving Growth with Belt and Road

At the heart of their economic ties is the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor. This corridor powers projects like the Kyaukpyu Special Economic Zone, joint railway upgrades, renewable energy ventures and industrial parks — all aimed at boosting development and jobs.

Security and Solidarity

Under the Global Security Initiative, the two neighbors have conducted over 150 joint patrols by May 2025 to secure the Mekong River region. Collaboration on transnational crime, disaster relief and public health has deepened their resilience.

When a powerful quake struck Myanmar in March, China sent the first international medical and disease control team to Mandalay, underscoring the practical solidarity between them.

Looking Ahead

As unilateralism and regional challenges rise, China and Myanmar will expand cooperation under frameworks like Lancang–Mekong. By aligning on the Global Development, Security and Civilization Initiatives, they aim to build a more peaceful, secure and prosperous future.
