Since its launch in 2014 by the BRICS nations, the New Development Bank (NDB) has carved out a new path for infrastructure and sustainable development across emerging economies. Headquartered in Shanghai on the Chinese mainland, the bank champions a multipolar financial system and forges global partnerships to uplift the Global South.
Fresh off Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to NDB's Shanghai headquarters on April 29, NDB President Dilma Rousseff sat down with CMG's Zou Yun for an exclusive Leaders Talk. Appointed in 2023 and recently granted a second five-year term, Rousseff shared her vision for the bank's next chapter.
“Our mission is clear,” Rousseff told Zou. “We're committed to empowering emerging markets with green energy, modern transport and digital infrastructure. By aligning with the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind, we can drive sustainable growth and ensure that developing economies have a real seat at the table.”
Under her stewardship, the NDB has expanded its portfolio, focusing on projects that blend economic impact with social and environmental benefits. Rousseff emphasized the importance of data-driven decision-making, noting that every project undergoes rigorous assessment to measure outcomes like carbon reduction and job creation.
Looking ahead, Rousseff outlined plans to deepen collaboration with partners in Africa and Latin America, diversify funding sources and explore innovative financing tools such as green bonds. She also highlighted the bank's role in supporting digital nomads and tech entrepreneurs through investments in broadband networks and smart cities.
As the NDB enters its second decade, Rousseff's leadership underscores a commitment to inclusivity, transparency and long-term impact. “We're building bridges—both literal and financial—so that young changemakers around the world can thrive,” she said.
