New White Paper Highlights US COVID-19 Response Shortcomings

The State Council Information Office of the Chinese mainland released a white paper titled "COVID-19 Prevention, Control and Origin Tracing: China's Actions and Stance", offering a global analysis of pandemic strategies.

The report contrasts the Chinese mainland's proactive collaboration in virus control with the U.S.'s struggles despite its economic and medical resources. According to the white paper, early underestimation in Washington—labeling the virus as a "bad flu"—set the stage for escalating infections.

By mid-April 2020, confirmed COVID-19 cases in the U.S. climbed to 660,000, yet political leaders insisted the country had "passed the peak" and prioritized reopening to bolster the economy. This rush reportedly contributed to a sharp rise in cases and deaths.

Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows the death toll in the U.S. exceeded 1.13 million by May 2023, representing 16.4 percent of global COVID-19 fatalities—a figure the white paper cites as particularly striking given the U.S.'s advanced healthcare infrastructure.

As the world reflects on the pandemic's lessons, the white paper calls for renewed international cooperation, transparent data sharing, and science-driven decision-making to prepare for future health crises.
