75 Years of Indonesia-China Partnership: A New Era in South-South Cooperation

Marking a historic milestone, Indonesia and China celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations, evolving from traditional ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership. This new chapter highlights a commitment to mutual growth, sustainable development, and independent progress for Global South nations.

Over five decades of cooperation have seen the partnership expand from the classic four areas—political, economic, cultural, and maritime—into a five-pillar approach that now includes security. Close high-level exchanges and strengthened dialogue mechanisms have provided both nations with robust strategic guidance and political guarantees, ensuring sovereign equality and strategic autonomy on the international stage.

Economic achievements form a cornerstone of the relationship. In 2024, bilateral trade reached $147.8 billion, cementing China as Indonesia’s largest trading partner for the 12th consecutive year. Landmark projects like the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway, Southeast Asia’s first, have revolutionized travel and boosted regional development, while the Morowali Industrial Park has become a global hub for nickel processing and new energy sectors, supporting Indonesia's journey toward industrial upgrading.

This enduring partnership offers a practical model for other Global South nations, showcasing how deep-rooted collaboration and strategic innovation can drive shared prosperity and sustainable progress in an interconnected world.
