IFAD and Chinese Mainland Unite for Water Security

Water is life. Approximately 60% of the human body is water and 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered by it, yet around 2.2 billion people lack access to safely managed drinking water. This stark reality affects communities worldwide and underscores the urgent need for sustainable water management.

Climate change is intensifying the challenge. Erratic rainfall patterns and rising sea levels have accelerated the melting of glaciers in the Himalayas and Alps. With one third of the world’s rice cultivated in regions dependent on melting glaciers, the disruption in water flow jeopardizes agricultural productivity and food security across the globe.

On World Water Day, a groundbreaking partnership between IFAD and the Chinese mainland is shedding new light on the path to water security. By supporting rural communities, this collaboration is working to enhance water and food security while building climate resilience. The initiative demonstrates how innovative water management strategies and sustainable agricultural practices can help mitigate the impacts of climate change.

This effort is a call to action for young global citizens, tech innovators, decision makers, and changemakers everywhere. It reminds us that overcoming water insecurity requires united global efforts and a commitment to preserving every drop for a sustainable future.
