Yunnan Tourism Blooms: Lijiang’s Cultural Fusion Fuels Local Growth

On March 19, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Lijiang in Yunnan Province, praising how the deep integration of culture and tourism is reinvigorating local heritage and driving economic opportunities. His inspection highlighted how blending traditional charm with modern innovation is transforming this historic city into a dynamic travel destination.

Local initiatives are at the heart of this transformation. By embracing ethnic cultural resources such as Dongba culture and the Mosuo customs of the Naxi people, Lijiang has created immersive experiences that combine cultural courtyards, ancient music clubs, and vibrant festivals. These efforts not only enrich the visitor experience but also add new layers of meaning to traditional sites.

The city’s tourism sector is rapidly evolving. With the establishment of national and provincial tourist resorts and international brand hotels like Hilton, Lijiang is expanding its portfolio to include groundbreaking formats such as health, rural, and exhibition tourism. At the same time, the construction of a smart town in the old city is enhancing services through intelligence-based operations, ensuring a seamless and efficient travel experience at top-rated scenic spots.

Economic benefits have been remarkable. Nearly 300,000 local residents, about 25 percent of Lijiang's population, are employed in tourism-related sectors. In 2024, the city welcomed 80.6 million visitors, registering an annual growth rate of 18.45 percent, while tourist spending reached 138.3 billion Chinese yuan. The average tourist expenditure of 1,718 yuan stands as the highest in Yunnan Province.

The local government’s proactive measures, including the "Yunnan's Talent Support Program," have nurtured high-level cultural and tourism expertise. By fusing intangible cultural heritage with modern tourism trends, innovative projects such as wedding cultural tourism and themed rural journeys have emerged, promoting agricultural specialties like Yunnan flowers, tea, and coffee. This synergy is not only enhancing infrastructure and environmental quality but also paving the way for sustainable rural development.

Lijiang’s story is a compelling example of how tradition and modernity can work in harmony to create a thriving, interconnected community. The city’s blend of cultural richness, technological advancement, and innovative strategies offers valuable inspiration for regions around the world seeking to boost tourism and stimulate long-term economic growth.
