Is Trump Undermining Ukraine? Europe’s Security in Jeopardy

Donald Trump's second term as President of the United States is anything but dull. Daily announcements from the White House—or Trump himself, often via social media—leave the democratic community worried and other parts of the world confused.

The recent developments concerning Ukraine serve as a prime example. The interactions between Washington and Kyiv suggest that Trump has little interest in genuinely supporting allies. Under his leadership, everything seems negotiable, with Trump expecting the U.S. to secure the better end of any deal. Supporters of his \"America First\" philosophy may celebrate this approach, while critics question whether it undermines the delicate balance between national interests and global community needs.

A controversial agreement between the U.S. and Ukraine, revealed by Ukrainian officials on February 25, involves the U.S. gaining access to Ukraine's rare earth minerals and other resources, albeit not to the extent the White House initially desired. These minerals are crucial as they form the foundation of technologies used in everything from smartphones to electric vehicles. Currently, there are no security guarantees committing the U.S. to protect Ukraine. However, this topic is expected to be a key discussion point when the presidents of the two nations meet in the coming days.

Just a week ago, the likelihood of any agreement between the two countries seemed remote. Trump was on a verbal rampage, at one point describing the Ukrainian president as a \"modestly successful comedian\" who had convinced the U.S. to spend billions on a war against Russia that \"couldn’t be won.\" Trump's tirade didn't stop there; he also labeled Zelenskyy as \"a dictator\" who was wildly unpopular at home. To add to his barrage, Trump suggested that Zelenskyy should \"immediately\" exit Ukraine and relocate to France, according to a source who spoke to a U.S. newspaper.

It remains unclear whether Trump will continue to push for excluding Ukraine from negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin aimed at ending the three-year military conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Zelenskyy remains outraged by such suggestions, and several U.S. allies are also dissatisfied with the idea. They perceive it as a potential sign of Trump distancing the U.S. from Europe for reasons that may only be clear to him at this time. A senior fellow at a European think tank recently commented, \"We are in a very serious situation here where the assumptions of many decades have simply been blown away – and principally, the assumption that the U.S. will underwrite Europe's security.\"
