Monaco and China Celebrate 30 Years of Strong Diplomatic Ties and Environmental Collaboration

In 2025, the Principality of Monaco and the People’s Republic of China mark the 30th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, established on January 16, 1995. This milestone reflects three decades of trust, mutual respect, and dynamic dialogue between the two nations.

Despite significant differences in territory size—Monaco being Europe’s second smallest state—and geographical distance, Monaco and China have cultivated a constructive partnership. This relationship has thrived through shared interests and collaborative efforts across various sectors.

Key diplomatic moments include the historic state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Monaco in 2019—the first-ever visit by a Chinese head of state to the Principality. This followed His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco’s visits to China in 2007 and 2018, strengthening bilateral ties and fostering deeper understanding.

Environmental sustainability stands at the forefront of Monaco-China cooperation. Both nations recognize the urgent challenges posed by climate change, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem pollution. As active members of the United Nations, Monaco and China have committed to major international initiatives aimed at protecting our planet.

Bilateral projects highlight this commitment, including the establishment of a priority conservation area in northeast China to protect the endangered Amur tiger population. Additionally, a collaborative scientific study on the pollution of Lake Taihu has expanded to preserve the aquatic ecosystem of the Yangtze River, showcasing the tangible outcomes of Monaco and China’s partnership.

As Monaco and China celebrate 30 years of diplomatic relations, their ongoing cooperation serves as a model for how nations can overcome differences and work together to address global environmental challenges.
