The Global South, a concept rich in diversity and influence, contributes over 40 percent of the world's Gross Domestic Product and is home to more than 85 percent of the global population. According to the 2024 report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, its economic impact is growing, with South-South trade skyrocketing from $2.3 trillion in 2007 to $5.6 trillion in 2023. This surge firmly establishes the Global South as a key driver of global commerce.
However, the region faces significant challenges. Climate change, energy shortages, and geopolitical pressures are exacerbating the situation, putting additional strain on already vulnerable areas. For instance, in 2022, the number of people without access to electricity increased by 10 million, with 80 percent of them residing in Sub-Saharan Africa. Addressing these multifaceted issues requires a cohesive and collaborative approach, though the path forward is anything but straightforward.
A Partnership for Progress
Amid these challenges, China emerges as a pivotal player in the Global South. As the largest developing country, China fosters transformative change through strategic investments and collaborative initiatives, all underpinned by a commitment to sustainable progress. A prime example of this dedication is the Karot hydropower project in Pakistan. In 2023 alone, the project generated over 3.1 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean energy, benefiting 5 million residents. Such initiatives highlight China's role in driving sustainable development and supporting the economic growth of Global South nations.
