China and Peru Unite with Chancay Port Inauguration

China and Peru have taken a significant step in strengthening their bilateral relations with the inauguration of Chancay Port. This development is a key component of China's Belt and Road Initiative, aimed at enhancing trade and infrastructure connections between Asia and Latin America.

During the ceremony held on November 14, Chinese Premier Xi Jinping joined Peruvian President Dina Boluarte via video link from Lima to officially open the port. Xi Jinping highlighted that Chancay Port is becoming \"a new starting point of an Inca Trail of the New Era,\" symbolizing the deepening friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

Chancay Port, located approximately 80 kilometers north of Lima, is strategically positioned to serve as a major land-sea gateway. The port is designed to accommodate mega container ships with a capacity of 18,000 TEUs and aims to handle up to 1 million TEUs annually in its initial phase, with plans to expand to 1.5 million TEUs in the future. This infrastructure will significantly boost Peru's role in global trade, connecting the South American continent more closely with the vast markets of Asia.

The collaboration between China and Peru on this project reflects a shared vision for economic growth and connectivity. Zhou Zhiwei, a research fellow at the Institute of Latin American Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted that the Chancay Port initiative embodies the mutual understanding of emerging global economic dynamics and Peru's eagerness to engage with China's vibrant market.

More than 500 years ago, the Inca ancestors built the famed Inca Trail through the Andes, demonstrating resilience and ingenuity. Today, the modern Chancay Port project revitalizes this historic corridor, paving the way for new opportunities and advancements as part of the Belt and Road cooperation.
