Can the Global South Drive Global Growth in Turbulent Times?

The Global South is emerging as a pivotal force for development amidst a world grappling with volatility and division. At the second Global South Think Tanks Dialogue in Nanjing, the launch of the Global South Think Tank Alliance marked a significant step towards uniting diverse perspectives from around 100 countries.

Representing approximately 80 percent of the world's population, the Global South accounts for over 40 percent of global GDP and 51 percent of global trade. According to the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, it serves as \"an organizing principle to guide a reimagining of a more just international economy and world order.\"

In an era where geopolitical tensions and ideological extremes are prevalent, collaboration becomes crucial. Nathalie Tocci, director of the Istituto Affari Internazionali in Rome, highlighted the increasing fragmentation of global dialogue, stating, \"The world is ever more connected…yet the world is ever more divided and fragmented.\"

Against this backdrop, the Global South is asserting its influence. Luka Biong Deng Kuol, managing director of the Sudd Institute and former Minister of Presidential Affairs of South Sudan, emphasized the region's proactive stance: \"The Global South is not going to be an observer. We want to be active in the global agenda.\" He added that without the right policies, security and peace talks remain elusive.

As the Global South continues to unite and define its role, it holds the potential to shape a more equitable and resilient global economy, fostering growth and stability in an increasingly uncertain world.
